Rescued animals at white barn healing arts

In order to bring peace and healing into our own lives, we need to respect and honor ALL living beings. The rescued farm animals who reside at White Barn Healing Arts Center all have a story of rescue, of healing, and a lesson to share.

They are all permanent residents at White Barn, being assured they will be loved and cared for throughout the remainder of their life. They are here to inspire guests, to bring a sense of peace and hope to the facility of White Barn, and to bring smiles to the faces of all who meet them. Research has shown that being in the presence of animals, observing them, petting them, or caring for them, is very therapeutic and uplifting.

Rescued Animal Sponsorships help provide care for the rescued animals. Each sponsor will receive an email package of a photo, history, and information about the rescued animal they are sponsoring.  Sponsors will also be invited to one of several Sponsor Days at White Barn which will be held throughout the year so sponsors can see the animals in person. You may use an animal sponsorship as a gift.

Moolan is a 4 year old Heifer, part Black Angus mixed with an unknown breed. She showed up one day at White Barn Healing Arts Center as a stray/feral cow. After finding her owner in the neighborhood, we discovered that she, along with another cow, was recently purchased at an auction and she was new to their farm. A caretaker left the gate unlatched and the two cows escaped.  The second cow was able to be led back to the farm, and Moolan was not having it. She had freedom and there was no going back. she decided she was going to take up residence in the open field at White Barn. Since the owner was unable to re-capture her safely, he asked of he could shoot her on our property. Of course that was out of the question. We asked if we could keep her if we could catch her, but we were told we would never catch her. She was dangerous and wild and that she would take down our fences. Within the week we safely caught her in the fenced-in field. A White Barn supporter helped us to pay the owner for her freedom. With months she was getting used to us and was calming down considerably. Not too long after that we could pet her over the stall wall. Moolan continued to place her trust in us, until today, we can go into her stall when she's laying down and place hay in front of her. She loves to be hugged and groomed and she takes carrots from your hand. She loves attention and comes in when she's called. Moolan is a shining example of how to overcome our fears and of what it means to trust.

Moolan's Care

Moolan eats very little grain as her genetics are such that she gains weight terribly quickly which is very bad for her joints and overall health. She is mostly grass-fed and hay-fed.

Moolan eats approximately 2 lbs of grain per day, with a 50 lb. bag of grain lasting about 2 weeks, costing $18 per bag.

She eats a half bale of hay per day, at $4 per bale, it costs about $15 per week for her hay consumption.

Moolan is given thick sawdust bedding to help prevent bed sores on her massive frame. Sawdust is $6.50 per bag, using 2 bags per bed, changing the bedding every 2-3 days, costing about $26 per week.

She is dewormed twice a year with a pour-on applied to her back, at a cost of about $20 per application.

22 year old Belgian gelding retired from an Amish Farm due to health issues.

Levi. an 18 hands tall Belgian draft gelding, was retired as an Amish plow horse and retired with us through our friend in the Amish community, Willis Miller.  Levi was no longer able to pull his weight with the 8-hitch plow team due to ringbone in both front ankles. Ringbone is a medical condition where the cartilage and joint fluid are no longer cushioning the area between the bones of the ankles. X-rays provided the information needed to confirm this condition. Levi also has health issues with circulation problems and tends to have swelling issues if kept indoors. Here at White Barn we are able to provide the environment Levi needs to retire as comfortably as possible, and he has the ability to come and go freely at all times from his stall in the barn out to the three different pastures that afford him ample room to exercise and move about as needed.

Levi's Care

Levi eats approximately 7 lbs of grain per day, going through a 50 lb. bag of grain per week, at $18 per bag.

He also eats a half bale of hay per day, with hay being $4 per bale, therefor eating about $15 of hay per week.

Levi gets his hooves trimmed by the blacksmith every 8 weeks at $90 per trim.

For pain management for ringbone, Levi is on 1 to 2 tablets of Bute, a horse aspirin, daily, costing approximately $30 per month for anti-inflammatories.

Levi is also checked by the vet as needed, usually twice each year. This year he had his teeth "floated", meaning filed, as is needed for horses from time to time to prevent ulcers or painful areas from being creating in their mouth by sharp or cracked teeth. That procedure, normally done yearly or every other year, is approximately $175.

Levi is also dewormed as needed, costing about $50 per year.

Fly spray during fly season keeps biting flies away - we normally spend about $150 per season on fly spray for the barn animals.

Female turkey, approximately 10-12 years old.   Jill the turkey was removed from a situation in Medina County where all of the other feathered friends with her were killed by predators. She had lived inside a small shed with a very small, mucky yard. Jill is approximately 10+ years old and mostly blind. She often calls to her chicken friends at White Barn to hear them call back so she can locate her flock. Her BFF is Bella the duck. Jill loves pie, bread, peas, and other people food. At 10+ years old, Jill is allowed to eat whatever she pleases. During the day, Jill wanders about the yards with her feathered friends at White Barn, often napping under a tree or sitting in the cool shade under the porch. Jill's CareJill likes to nest under her warm heat lamp during colder weather - the heat lamps definitely add to the cost of electricity during winter. During hot weather, Jill sits in front of her fan to keep cool - another add-on to the electric bill.  She has both sawdust shavings on the floor of her coup as well as a thick bed of hay to next in. She has unlimited access to scratch  grains and layer crumbles as well as multiple bowls of fresh water at all times. Jill is a precious, older turkey who is enjoying her senior years of freedom and healthy living.

Dozer was rescued from a situation of abandonment in the Cleveland area and was removed from a house by the humane officers of the Cleveland Animal Protective League. He is a senior piggy at approximately 13 years old, and deals with the health issue that often comes with older pigs — severe arthritis.

Dozer's Care

Dozer is on Meloxicam daily (2 15 mm tabs) to help with arthritis, as well as Cosequin (3 tabs daily) joint supplements (made for dogs) and fish oil capsules. His meds and supplements come to $15 per month.

He gets warm, thick layers of hay in the winter for his bedding.  Hay is currently $4 per bale and we usually go through 2 bales per week for the piggies.

He is dewormed twice a year, at approximately $10 per treatment.

Much of his food is donated by caring friends and neighbors. He lives in the garage with his two pig friends, Mr. Peabody and Truffles. In winter his home is heated, and during summer months it is cooled with fans.

Mr. Peabody was only about a year old at the time of his rescue, and this year he is about 12 years old. Mr. P, or just "P" for short, is friendly and normally enjoys belly rubs if he's in the mood for one. He loves rooting through the grass and exploring the yards here at White Barn. He lives with his other 2 rescued pig friends, Dozer and Truffles.  In the winter their  shelter located inside the one garage is heated for their comfort.

Mr. Peabody Care

Mr. P travelled to OSUVTH (Ohio State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital) in Columbus in September to have his tusks and hooves trimmed while under anesthesia. Believe it or not, it's actually cheaper (and much safe for the pig) to take the trip to OSU than to have these same procedures done locally. The vet cost for this was approximately $175 and gas cost was about $100, and when added together came in about $300 less than if we would have scheduled this at a local vet clinic.

Mr. Peabody gets warm, thick layers of hay in the winter for his bedding.  Hay is at $4 per bale and we usually go through 2 bales per week for the piggies.

Mr. P is dewormed twice a year, at approximately $10 per treatment.

Most of his food is donated by caring friends and neighbors.

Truffles was only about 10 months old was her rescue took place. She went to OSU (Ohio State University Medical Center) in Columbus for an examination.  The vet concluded that she was possibly attacked by a larger predator, as the muscles on her back and near the back of her neck appeared to have been severely injured resulting in large lumps on her back. They seemed to have healed in masses.  Truffles is unassuming, friendly, talkative, an d simply a joy to have around. She is an outdoors girl, loves nature, and even on the coldest or hottest days when other animals choose to stay indoors, Truff wants to be out and about in the great outdoors.

The pond had frozen over, there was no food, no water source, and no shelter for this group of feathered friends. One duck in the group had already been captured and killed by a predator. As the only remaining female, Bella was becoming beaten up by the boys in her group. The three boys were adopted out together as a family, and Bella now resides in peace and comfort with her chicken friends. Her feathers are growing back, and her eye infections are all cleared up. The only remaining battle wound we cannot fix is an injured leg from where she too was attacked by a predator. Luckily Bella got away. She is sweet, outgoing, very vocal, and LOVES her baths!
